The Frustration and Joy of Toddlers

Toddler Behaviour

Stubborn I think is Sarah’s new middle name. She knows what she does and does not want, even at a very young age. From a very young age she started to assert her authority on the family with baby tantrums. Language and verbal communication is not yet necessary for Sarah. Sarah has very limited speech due to her age, but she actually communicates well. Simple communication is done through language and gestures.

Non verbal communication has come easily for Sarah. she gives a huge grin when she gets her own way. Typically of most toddlers, screaming, crying and yelling are common place when she does not get what she wants. This stage is actually marking an exciting time in development.

Sarah has started tantrums a lot earlier than her sister Charlotte, who is now 6. Charlotte really did not have too many tantrums, Sarah on the other hand is the Queen of them and has been since she was one.

I know many parents who love the toddler stage, but are also frustrated with the toddler problems associated with it. Fights, tantrums and head banging, lying on the floor and crying! This stage of development can be frustrating but it also marks a stage of great development.

Funnily enough, I am not too worried about this stage because I have learnt the secret to dealing with toddlers temper tantrums. The toddler stage may be normal, but as I parent I am happy to have learnt the skills needed to maintain a peaceful home.

There is help out there for parents wanting to learn the skills required to calmly parent a toddler. There is a wonderful audio program, which can guide you through this stage, step by step. You will learn how to deal with your toddler in positive ways to ensure harmony in the household. Some skills can even be used with older children and teenagers.

It is mind blowing that you can actually advert a tantrum just by the words you chose to use with your toddler. The psychological power of words and the impact they can have is incredible. Did you know talking to your toddler in a certain way can actually have a huge impact on their behavior.

At this stage of your childs develoment, dont get frustrated. There are resources out there for parents wanting to influence their skills in a positive way.
