Breast milk provides the primary source of nutrition to newborns.  Nursing is the natural way of obtaining breast milk from the mother. Alternately milk can also be pumped and fed to the newborn via a bottle or cup. In some cases, especially if the mother has to leave her child for a period of time, it might be necessary to store breast milk for her child’s use through her absence. Breast milk can be stored in hard plastic or glass bottles with the top sealed. Care should be taken to avoid storing breast milk in ordinary plastic bags or formula bottle bags. Pumped breast milk should be stored in a refrigerator or other cooling apparatus as soon as possible.  If the breast milk is stored at room temperature then the usage should be between 4 to 8 hours. If stored at the back of a refrigerator then it could be used for 5 days. If stored at the back of a separate freezer compartment then it could be used up to 3 months. Shake the container before feeding it to the baby. Do not mix fresh milk with one that has already been frozen. It is also advisable not to store milk, from an opened storage container, again. In case the frozen milk has been thawed it is best not to re-freeze it. Therefore it is important to store quantities which can be used for a single use in a container. It is also important to maintain cleanliness throughout the process of pumping, storing and feeding.
